Week 4 Blog post
Blog #4
GIMP is a program that takes images and is able to edit them and add/delete effects. I have never used this program or any other in my life so this is new to me. I watched the over 5 hrs of tutorials and some over and over again. I found that it to be a very difficult program for me, as I have not much experience with programs like this. Over time and a lot of practice I would possibly feel more comfortable using this program. It's awesome that its a free download and anybody can use it which makes it more desirable for a lot of people.
Gimp vs Photoshop: Gimp is free, Photoshop is very expensive. Gimp is fast and stable vs Photoshop being sluggish and slow due to being a huge program and resource friendly. Gimp is more user friendly according to google, that scares me lol as I found it challenging to understand all the things possible. Gimp can open, edit and save Photoshop's files. You also get free upgrades. And it offers the same look and feel of Photoshop.
Gimp in Education, I could see this program being used in schools for computer classes or some kind of multimedia class. As for my shop classes I wouldn't use it or have any use for it. When you teach a specific subject, you have outcomes that need to be taught and covered by the end of the class.
The training was very nicely laid out, step by step instructions. Along with the image resources so you can also follow along and try doing what the lesson was about. although it would definitely benefit you if you had a second resource to watch it on while your doing the tutorial on your laptop. I do not feel comfortable with this program at all, I would probably need to watch the tutorials 3-4 times and still be able to refresh all it discusses. It goes in great detail and was a lot to take in. I'll be able to pick away and get the assignment complete, more than likely wont look or use this program after this class.
I will give you kudos Lance on making it through the whole 5 hours of tutorials so fast. I got through a fraction of that!
ReplyDeleteJust commenting on what you said about the use in Education, being a up coming shop teacher myself, I agree with you that right now it seems like the use would be limited. With technology changing so fast, I guess that could change things.
Oh it wasn't fast at all, been working at it for over a week and a half. Totally agree, technology is changing so fast, I just don't see it fitting in my welding program.
DeleteJust downloaded GIMP. Super excited to get my hands on it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lance that this is a program that has a specific use in courses that have outcomes involving picture manipulation. I do think Lance could use it in his classroom maybe not as in depth as we went but could polish up some pics he uses for things such as bead examples he shows for welds.
